Although slimming is commonly discouraged during pregnancy,
The Royal College of Midwives Information Officer, Stephanie
Meakin gave us her advice about weight management during pregnancy.
“An overweight mother can make the midwife’s
job in helping her and her baby harder”, explained Stephanie.
“It’s difficult to palpate [feel] the baby, vaginal
examinations are more difficult and if a woman needs an epidural,
administering it may be more difficult.”
Stephanie also quashed the ‘eating for two’ theory,
explaining that a baby doesn’t need you to eat lots
of food, but it does need you to eat good food – fresh
fruit and vegetables.
“We feel it’s very important that overweight
women either stay the same weight or try, if they can, to
lose some, because they’ll fare better during labour
and afterwards,” said Stephanie.
If you are concerned about your weight and are considering
losing weight during your pregnancy, it is vital that you
discuss your plans with your GP and midwife before changing
your diet.
