The
definition of a sandwich is, according to the Collins English
Dictionary, “two or more slices of bread, usually buttered,
with a filling of meat, cheese, etc.” It sounds rather
dull doesn’t it? The history behind the humble hunger
buster is slightly more tantalising…
Did you know…
- The sandwich is named after John Montagu, the 4th Earl
of… (you know where!) who, in the mid 18th century,
requested that his meat dinner was served to him between
slices of bread. The reason for this unusual demand? The
Earl didn’t want to interrupt his game of cards!
- Have you ever fancied a cheese and pickle or ham and
mustard “portsmouth”? Probably not, but had
the first John Montagu taken his intended title of the
Earl of Portsmouth, you may well have discovered one in
your lunchbox every day!
- Just a couple of miles from the Kent market town of
Sandwich is a little hamlet called Ham! And, yes, the
signpost reads Ham Sandwich!
The outer limits
We all have our favourites, don’t we? Whether it’s
white sliced, a wholegrain roll, a couple of slices of pumpernickel
or even a tortilla wrap the outside of a sandwich always needs
to be counted – either as a Healthy Extra choice or
Syns. And some of the Syns can be quite surprising!
